The greek word 'anthropos' is used for mankind in general in revelations.

As has been said in this thread already, it appears that Revelations refers to Nero and the Roman Empire in general as the first incarnation of the Antichrist.
Nero Kaiser = 666 or 616 (depends on way of writing) if you transfer the letters to numbers. I think it's clear that John meant Nero to be the antichrist.

For sure if you take into account that in Rev 17:8 it says that:
"The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend"

The beast (mostly known as antichrist) is not at the moment of the writing of revelations (most likely to be written in 90AD during the reigh of Domitianus)
As been said in this thread already, the christians expected Nero to return.

Revelations 17 speaks of the 8 kings, 5 have passed, 1 is, the 7th is yet to come.
The 8th will be the beast, who is out the (first) 7.
"And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition."

666 is the number of men because 7 is the number of God. Men chosed to be god (Genesis 3) which means men owns the knowledge of good and evil and can chose between good and evil. Man can decide on what is good and what is evil. This is according to the Bible the problem of men.

Men is god, divine, though men is, despite it greatness, as great as God. 666 means "Good but not God". That's what satan stands for (regardless if you believe or believe not in satan as an actual being). The person who whispers in your ear: "freedom". Which is, according to the Bible, a false freedom. The freedom of a young child that runs away from his father and mother because it thinks it can do whatever it wants if it is free, though away from it's parents there's no one who looks after it and it appears that it can't take care of itself.

Satan is in Revelation 13 presented as the anti-trinity.
God vs anti-god = satan (the dragon)
Jesus Christ vs anti-christ = the beast (from the sea)
The Holy Spirit vs the beast (from the land)

Like God created men (Genesis 1/2) through his Spirit (Genesis 2) the anti-spirit creates a creature in the image of the beast (from the water) and makes it alive (Revelations 13)

The message of Revelations 13 is that mankind will reject God and accepts themselves to be gods. They don't need a savior and they don't need someone who tells them what to do. Jesus will be replaced by a man who brings worldpeace. This person will, like Jesus, raise from (a certain) death. I think that Revelations 13 means that Satan will bring 'his son' to earth like God did.

Revelations 17, the 8 kings, are most of the time explained as:
1st king = Egypt
2nd king = Assyria
3th king = Babylon
4th king = Medo Persia
5th king = Greece
6th king = Rome
7th king = ???
8th king = reign of the antichrist

Since all 6 kings have much inpact in Israel, and the Bible is written around Israel, it is commonly accepted that the 7th and the 8th must have a big impact on Israel as well.

Babylon - Destroyed Jerusalem, moved the jews into excile
Medo Persia - Overtook Babylon, accepted that the jews would rebuild Jerusalem and the temple, and let the jews return
Greece - captured Israel and killed many jews many times
Rome - captured Israel, destroyed jerusalem in 70AD and 135AD. Destroyed the temple. Murdered 1.000.000 to 2.000.000 jews.

Therefor a lot of christians believe that hitler-Germany was the 7th kingdom (who would reign a short-time - for sure compared to the first 6)
Hitler Germany murdered 6.000.000 jews. The outcome of wwII was, ironicly, the re-establishing of Israel.

If you follow this way of thinking the 8th king must have something to do with Israel and the jews as well. People speculate on a huge war on Israel again (not unthinkable) or (and) peace in the middle east, brought by a man who receives much awe and respect for that. (maybe after a huge war)
