  • Evocative Songs

I've been listening to some tunes lately that got me thinking...

When songs are constructed just right, with the perfect blend of music and lyric, they can sort of become a movie in your head. They "tell a story", but it's more than that...with a few words they can describe so much more. They're few and far between, from what I can tell.

The one I've most recently listened to is called "Motorcycle Drive-by". I'd link to the MP3 but that's illegal. The lyrics are below, but it's not as striking without the music.

Summer time and the wind is blowing
    outside in lower chelsea.
And I dont know what Im doing in this city,
The sun is always in my eyes.

    It crashes through the windows,
and Im sleeping on the couch,
When I came to visit you.
    Thats when I knew
that I could never have you,
I knew that before you did,
Still I'm the one who's stupid.

    And there's this burning...
    like theres always been,
    I've never been so alone,
and I've never been so alive.

Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by,
The cigarette ash flies in your eyes,
and you don't mind, you smile,
And say the world doesn't fit with you.
    I don't believe you, you're so serene.

    Careening through the universe,
    your axis on a tilt.
    You're guiltless and free...
I hope you take a piece of me with you.

And theres things I'd like to do that you don't believe in,
I would like to build something,
but you'd never see it happen.

    And there's this burning...
    like theres always been,
    Ive never been so alone,
and Ive never been so alive.

Where's the soul? I want to know
    New York city's evil.
    The surface is everything.
But I could never do that...
    Someone would see through that.

And this is the last time,
    we'll be friends again.
    And Ill get over you,
    you'll wonder who I am.

    And there's this burning...
    like theres always been,
Ive never been so alone, alone...
    and I've, and I've...
    I've never been so alive
    So alive

I go home to the coast, it starts to rain,
I paddle out on the water.
    Alone.
Taste the salt and taste the pain,
I'm not thinking of you again.

    Summer dies
    and swells rise,
the sun goes down in my eyes,
see this rolling wave, darkly coming to take me...
    home.

And I never been so alone,
    and I've
    never been so alive.
There's a lot movies where the music made the film great, but how often do you hear a song that makes you feel like you're watching a movie? If so, what kind of songs are they. Want to expand my collection.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

          Someone will be banned soon
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
