Um no... this either or stuff really doesn't help your case.
There are multiple potential punishments. They can get 6 months in jail, or 1 year or 2 years or, etc, etc. Don't try to turn this into black or white to try to get more sympathy for these punks.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. BTW, how is this a youth-rights issue? These guys, even though they're young, are adults.
While I think they should get a light punishment because they did it out of stupidity instead of malice (and the actual consequences aren't too bad too), I don't think age should be taken into account.
Pretending otherwise is an ageist position!
