This was proven decades ago. Why do you think it was banned way back in the sixties? And sorry, my brain's not good enuf to remember specific studies from way back then.

So I'll make you a deal:
If DDT is safe enough for Africans, then it's safe enough for Americans.
If DDT is too dangerous for Americans, then it's too dangerous for Africans.

    Anything less is genocide.

      Genocide of what? Birds?

I'd think that the more genocidal policy would be to allow malaria to continue killing off Africans.

        loinburger makes a good point.

BTW: Does anyone know what the death rate of Africans is from mosquitos?

          I want a citation.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

From the CDC website (citing a WHO report):

Between 350 and 500 million clinical episodes of malaria occur every year.
At least one million deaths occur every year due to malaria.
About 60% of the cases of malaria worldwide and more than 80% of the malaria deaths worldwide occur in Africa south of the Sahara.

There's also some belief that DDT may be responsible for the increase in breast cancer, as it is fat soluable and mammeries are basicaly fat bags.

About 3 million people die of Malaria every year, an immense majority of them in Africa.

Oh, and I doubt DDT will offset habitats as favourable as those which are usually found in Africa. Maybe a better use of resources would be to drain mosquito-terrain near cities, and to sanitize the cities.

Well, it's not so much the swamps as it is the garbage in and around human habitats. It doesn't take much water at all fo the damn things to breed in. Draining the swamps leads to other problems, btw.

A Green development for Africa may seem the best thing to do, but Africa itself is in such a miserable conditions that there's nothing else to do. Enviromental rape will be the easiest, quickest way to trigger an economical change in that continent, then it will be possible to care about the forests and those poor chimps, the trees and whatever. Humans first, then the nature.
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Don't forget that a large part of Africa is experiencing an ecological catastrophe right now, with the growth of the desert, and with the transformation of fertile land into arid zones.

Quick'n'dirty development policies have accelerated this catastrophe in the past, and they have often proven useless for long-term development anyway.

The main thing Africa needs, development-wise, is responsible policy-making. Africa's dirt-poorness doesn't come from lack of natural resources (definitely not), or from the laziness of Africans. It comes from war, omnipresent corruption, and total instability. Côte d'Ivoire is a current prime example of how wealth can go utterly to waste when ****ers at the helm will do anyhitng for themselves.
