The term 'Indie' originally referred to the 'independent' music labels that released post-punk guitar rock in the eighties. The term became associated with the musical genre, rather than the business model.Comment

Yes, Pixies (not The Pixies) are the best Indie band of all time, but not by much, as Throwing Muses are right on their shoulder, and were actually releasing stuff on 4AD before Pixies with similar musical innovations. I even heard that Kristin Hersh helped Pixies get their 4AD deal.
I had the pleasure of meeting Frank Black a couple of years ago at a local pub venue where he was doing a secret guest DJ slot. Top geezer, he was taking photos of us, the crowd.
