  • Whatever happened to Virtual Reality

Wasn't this supposed to be the next big thing in gaming (back in the early 90's)? It seems to have faded away somewhere along the road...

I was wondering that same thing, and often. I really wanted to check it out. Where?

You can buy 3D glasses and stuff for your PC. Some are cheaper, some are more expensive.

It's not VR, and I don't know how good they are, but they are glasses you wear on your head and you play games...

      HUZZAH

      here's one

Virtual reality is an artificially created, similar to the world around us. New technical means make it possible to create unique effects.

oh, this isn't something you use with a monitor... it's an actual display system.

The game compatability list is limited, however.
To us, it is the BEAST.

I was also just recentely wondering about this.

i think that it proved more difficult than anticipated to fully fool the human senses. People would get nauseous due to an "incomplete fooling", get headaches from the weight/pressure of the headgear, etc.

It's probably still coming, just needs more CPU power and more advanced (ie higher resolution, lighter) AV gear than predicted.

I think PC to brain connections are not that far ahead in the future. It's quite possible that in, perhaps, 25 years time we'll be hooking our brains up to PC's and playing games that way.

There is a lot of research into that field, though I'm not sure how it will eventually make it's way into the consumer market... let alone how it will take form in gaming.

I don't think that VR as it was in the 90's will make a comeback. It was too cumbersome.

I seem to recall that the latest E3 had few companies with VR gear.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

I think it was just impossible for the public to stay interested in virtual reality once they had their first taste of the obviously superior virtual insanity...

I'm confident that the time-honoured and highly innovative porn industry will eventually lead the way.

I work in a building that's meant to be a "Centre for Advanced Software and Technology" that's just been opened. In reality it's just a giant building with lots of office space for new companies, hopefully with an innovative streak that can be nurtured.

Anyway.... there's a big.... concrete block... that's stuck in the middle of the building, it's meant to be a cave, though I think they've named it the "virtual reality cube". In any case, I guess that means there are still people out there willing to investigate/invest in vr technology.

Have you been to a good arcade lately? I go to Dave & Busters every now and then and there are some games there that are VR-type.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
