  • Firefox bookmark woes

A couple months back I started firefox one day to find that I had no bookmarks whatsoever. Only a tiny hadnful of firefox "default" bookmarks were in the bookmark tree.

I managed to restore a bookmark backup but even then I could only see some of my bookmarks. They were arranged in alphabetical order of subdirectory and all of the subdirectories betyond those starting with 's' were still gone, even though directly opening the html file that I had restored from showed those directories were in the file.

I decided to just live with this after getting fed up with trying to fix it but lately a new problem has arisen and not even uninstalling and reinstalling firefox has been able to resolve it. Now when i want to place a new bookmark it allows me to place them in one of 5 directories under the "create in" menu but if I try to click the little arrow to the right of that to select one of the other directories nothing happens. the little arrow 'depresses' like a button on an unplugged appliance but nothing happens no drop down menu appears. only the "new folder" button appears. It used to be that the new folder button would appear and it would also give me a drop down menu of *all* of my folders to select one for my new bookmark to be created in.

Has anybody else encountered firefox bookmark difficulties?

Would reverting to a version earlier than 1.5.0.3 help me out? I'm almost ready to give up on Firefox for good. Browsers kinda suck without reliable useable bookmarks.

It's a known bug and it, unfortunately, won't be fixed until Firefox3 which moves to a totally new bookmarks/history back-end.

    Check for a backup file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[profilename]\

There should be a "bookmarks.bak" file. Delete "bookmarks.html" and rename "bookmarks.bak" to "bookmarks.html"

It used to eat my bookmarks once every 6 months or so, but the newer versions have stopped doing that.

        No, they haven't.

Mine have never been eaten. Seems totally random.

          thanks!

Like I said, I've (successfully?) done exactly that, but it's now making it impossible for me to put bookmarks in any folder other than the 4 that happen to be in the create in drop down menu even though I've got like 10-12 other folders I want to put new bookmarks into.

Furthermore doing as you said brought back most of my folders but the last few remain invisible. i can't see them in my list of folders even though they are in the bookmarks.html file i made from bookmarks.bak

Had the same happen, but was trying a new defrag prog at the time, thought that was the reason.

I have never seen that. Could you open the HTML file normally in a browser?

did you have all of the problems? inability to select all your folders for making a new bookmark in? Being able to see some restored folders from the backup but not all of them? If they really are exactly the same problem maybe they will be a clue.

I guess you may attempt to fix this by modifying the bookmark file in a text editor. Don't forget to make a copy before you start.
