  • Violent Zapatistas?

I don't know a whole lot about the Zapatistas. and I'd like to learn more about them. Are there any objective sources on the topic? And I have a friend who told me that a lot of leftist groups in Latin America are pissed off at the Zapatistas because they are violent. I told him that was BS and that peaceful resistance is one of the main Zapatista principles, but he said that there are a lot of members of the Zapatistas who are violent and are hurting some of the leftist causes. This sounded completely false, I had never heard of anything like that, but I had to admit that I haven't followed them well enough to negate the statement. What is the truth?

And how effective are the autonomous communities? Are they really any different from the rest of Mexico?
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

The Zapatistas advocate armed self-defence. AFAIK, they've never shot at anyone except when defending themselves. Even when they took over all those cities in Chiapas for a few days back in '94.

There is no real love lost between the EZLN (the Zapatistas) and the PRD (the Party of Democratic Revolution) in Mexico. They compete for the same base, and there was recently a clash between EZLN-allied peasants and police dispatched by a PRD mayor near Mexico City.

As an organization the Zapatistas may not have officially fought in anything but self defence, but the individuals are certianly more violent.

I'd also suggest that "self defence" can be viewed differently depending on your point of view.

Certainly in the southwestern US, where I'm from, the Zapatistas have a very violent image, and make no effort to distance themselves from that image.

Yeah, that's kind of what I heard, do you know of any particular incidents? And can the organization itself be to blame for this?

How do you run people off thier land and away from a profitable enterprise without the use of violence?
