The hell we didn't! Do you know what a B-52 does? We did't annihilate North Vietnam's cities, ala Germany and Japan, but we bombed so much of Vietnam, that a total area the size of Massachussets in Vietnam is still basically desert.
We had the gloves off in both Korea and Vietnam. The only part of North Vietnam we didn't bomb was a ten-mile strip along the Chinese border, in order that we not accidentally bomb China and start a world war. We didn't put troops on the ground in North Vietnam for the same reason, because we believed, correctly as it turns out, that China would have intervened.
Two million Vietnamese died in the Vientamese-American War. If you think that's us holding back, what do you think we should have done, committ genocide?
