You have it backwards, actually. The original intelligence tests gave you a mental age. Someone then thought of taking the ratio of mental age to chronological age and called it the intelligence quotient.Comment

The problem with this (and the reason that IQ has nothing to do with ratios and is just a score normalized so that the average is 100 for a particular age range) is that mental growth is pretty nonlinear.Comment
