  • Slovenia Euro-apt says Commission, Lithuania rejected

    Old article at BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4985948.stm

    New article at SpOn: http://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/0,1518,416486,00.html

The Commission recommended that Slovenia introduce the Euro by January 1, 2007.

    Translated by Ec
Slovenia has reached a high degree of economic convergence with other member states and fulfills the criteria for an introduction of the Euro

Lithuania suffers too high inflation, says the Commission. The rejection of Lithuania is a precedent for strict application of the Maastricht criteria.

    Discuss.

IIRC, only Slovenia and Lithuania were applying for introducing the Euro in 07. The others probably knew they wouldn't fulfill the criteria.

      Anyhow: Slovenia

What's the inflation in Lithuania anyway? Stupid articles. I read somewhere recently that the inflation in Latvia is 5.9%

It's funny how the big dogs tell the little ones they have to follow the Maastricht criteria but then the big guys ignore the Maastricht criteria when ever they themselves feel like it.

                        EU Observer

But Lithuania has an inflation of 2.63 percent, while the EU benchmark is 2.6 percent.

The European Commission will today announce whether it will allow Lithuania and Slovenia to join the eurozone next year.

It doesn't seem insanely high, at least I'd say anything below 5% annually should be fine.
