  • Corporate Obligations

I want to start a business that would be directed at the Elderly, Handicapped, or those otherwise in need.

Every time I think about the possibility I feel ashamed, and think that it should probably be a charity or nonprofit service. However, when I talk to elderly people about it or about it to care givers of those who are old or handicapped they all think it is a good idea. Many people who can afford the service are too proud to take it as a charity, or want the same thing done that a charity does but quicker, better, or more stylish.

    Still, it seems wrong.

Say I wanted to start a company that sells wheelchairs. How would I go about making that business profitable without taking advantage of those in need?

What would you do? Donate to charity? Offer cheaper recycled/retrofitted chairs?

Are you more obligated as such an organziation to contribute to charity or have a great compassion for humanity than other companies?

I think most non-profit organizations don't believe they can make a profit by selling their service, but there is a need for their service. If you provide service to the organization you can still recieve a salary.

Do it like community theatre, where they don't demand that you pay for the service rendered, but they ask really nicely and give a big smile if you do.

I know a lot of people who work for not-for-profits, and make pretty decent livings.

Still, I guess my question is, where is the line drawn? Surely those who make wheelchairs are turning a profit. It seems wrong that they do when if they didn't sell them at all those people would have to crawl.

You can make profit and still give to those who can't afford your product. The only thing is I'm not sure if you can make it tax deductable. There might be a way if you organize as a sole proprietorship.

If you provide a service they need, there's no reason not to charge for it. And if you feel bad about getting rich, just charge less than what would be a normal asking price - but still enough to maintain your operations. That will take care of most competitors at the same time, which guarantees you a virtual monopoly.
It will come in handy when you finally come to your senses and realize that lots of money never is enough money. You're an American after all.

It's easier to steal little old ladies' money when they're in a wheelchair. Good thinking, Japher.

I would like more, and thus wouldn't make it a not-for-profit. More charity can be given if more money is taken from those who have it for a service they need. I think with the increase in population of those with money who will need assistance we will see an increase in spending in that area. My concern would be if all that assistance (given to wealthy people) is paid for by insurance companies or performed by charities.

It kind of stems from that other thread blaming the baby boomers. They are making a lot of money right now, my aim is to soak them for some of that money when they are older. The burden shouldn't lie on us.

I don't think I'm greedy, but at the same time I don't want to be broke.

I'll bet most if not all wheelchairs are made by for-profit companies. "Taking advantage" you will not be. You'll be providing a product for a fair profit. There is nothing immoral about making a living.

Also, often times, governmental program, an insurance company, or a charity will be picking up the check.
