  • Settle a silly argument

Suppose you had a six foot tall tree, and someone put a nail into it, three feet high.

In a few years, once the tree is 30 feet high, is the nail still three feet high? (Assuming it stays stuck in the tree.)

Would it not be? Wouldn't the tree grow around the nail spliting part of the tree in the process?

It grows from the top. The nail remains where it is.

If it's a copper nail it for certain doesn't move.

Should that matter? A regular one, like an oak or whatever.

You sure? How many times have you come across a really tall tree where the branching of the major limbs takes place above your head. Do you think the tree grew seven feet and then suddenly took off in different directions. Or could the branching of the first major limbs have risen from a lower location as the tree grew?

Aren't there usually knots at the bottom of a tree? Those are where dead limbs that fell off used to be.

If the nail gets rusty, won't the tree get tetanus and die before the few years are over?

Nope, ironoxides isn't poisionus - that's why you have to use copper nails on your neighbours trees.
