  • Does George Lucas Know How to Make Money or What?

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) -- The original theatrical versions of the first three "Star Wars" films are finally coming to DVD on September 12, two years after diehard fans blasted George Lucas for releasing only the digitally modified 2004 versions of the celebrated trilogy in a boxed collection.

This time, "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" will be available individually and appear on DVD exactly as they did in their respective theatrical runs in 1977, 1980 and 1983.

Each release, distributed by 20th Century Fox, will be a two-disc set that also includes the digitally tweaked 2004 edition.

The DVDs will be available only through December 31.

HAHA! I'm not wasting my money, but I know there are a bunch of nutjobs who desperatly wanted the 'originals' on DVD, who'll buy this and pad Lucas' wallet.

Brilliant move by Lucas, though I thought he was going to take a little longer to do it (after a prequal box set).

Amazing. Man. I can feel myself wanting to buy them. But I shouldn't. It's not the Jedi way.

I have the ****ty versions already. I can't see myself spending yet more money to get the version that should have been released to begin with.

Well I never bought the digitally redone versions, so I guess I'm free to get this set.

I have all three movies taped off of HBO from the late '80s.

So lets get this right. He gets criticized for not bringing out the originals on DVD and now he has brought them out he's getting more grief?

Well, think about it. Only the wackjobs really complained about how the changes 'ruined the story' (Waaah), so of course they won't be happy with this.

I think it's brilliant. I give him no grief at all, just a at capitalizing on the dorkdom of the 'originalists'

Why are people so keen on getting the old versions? I mean these movies are nothing more than fx orgies, so why having those with the inferior old fx? Not that I would buy any version......

Geeks will buy every version. It's a compulsive thing, they must have the complete collection.

Because some people like to remember the good old days when a simple, hardworking independent filmmaker wanted to make a simple story about a hardworking samurai cowboy who shoots lasers.
