You should definitely be respectful. You did invite him for dinner. However, I'm sure you were.

I'd ask him some general questions about his work based on honest curiosity and determine how much he is willing to reveal. If it gets too sensitive, I'd save the rest for the pub.

Most people really in MI aren't at liberty to confirm that fact let alone discuss what they do.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

2008 Presidential Candidate (for what its worth)

What? MI isn't what you think it is.

Most MI is basically sitting somewhere and look over reports and then guess what the enemy will do. That information is put in the "Enemy Situation" parts of OPORD.

        There aren't *that* many interrogators.

You're right in that it has many facets but most of it isn't in the public domain, and for good reason.

You're forgetting the rather huge numbers serving in the Service Cryptological Elements and working for the NSA.

I didn't know most of those have to be *that* secretive about their job.

I know about not telling the details, but no one in the army is supposed to really tell any details to anyone. That is what they say in the yearly briefing on blogs at least.

When I was in interrogators had Secret clearances, everyone who worked in SIGINT had Top Secret / sci clearances. That's pretty secretive.

People with high level clearances shouldn't advertise the fact either.

Good thing I've been out of the loop for 20 years then.

I had a secret level clearance. It's expired now though.

The clearance I had needed renewal every five years (but that varied).
