  • Texans take Mario Williams - NFL Draft Thread

According to ESPN News, the Texans have agreed to terms with DE Mario Williams and will make him their first round pick...

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $54 million deal, making him the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Saturday.

Of the $54 million, Williams is guaranteed $26.5 million.

Texans general manager Charley Casserly had cautioned earlier in the week that anyone concluding the team had decided on Southern California tailback and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and was only using Williams as leverage was mistaken.

The choice of Williams by the Texans could dramatically alter the landscape of the early segment of the first round. The New Orleans Saints, with the second choice, have indicated they would snap up Bush if he fell to their slot. But the Saints had hinted, in general, that they might entertain trade offers for their pick.

The availability of Bush at the No. 2 spot would almost certainly elicit trade offers.

      Indeed...

Now who trades for the #2 pick with the Saints? They could easily trade down to #3 or #4 with a pretty high safety level, even maybe #8 or so still guaranteeing one of the big 3 at QB, and with Bush available at #2 there are bound to be some big offers on the table.

Have to say though, i don't like this pick... they needed to help their offense more than their defense IMO.

if they didnt want reggie bush, they might as well have had cut David Carr lose and got Vince Young. Having a Houston native who can SCRAMBLE (David Carr is the leader in getting sacked) might have worked out if they didn't get reggie bush. Now it's up to dominick davis to establish the run to get pressure off of david carr (good luck!)

                  according to nfl.com:

But Texans owner Bob McNair talked about how the team laid out two scenarios. One featured drafting Bush and then the best pass-rushing defensive end in the second round. The other plan featured drafting Williams and then another running back with a high pick. The second plan is the one now being
So they might end up drafting someone like Lendale White or someone instead...?

this doesn't make much sense though... the problem with the Texans is quite simple... David Carr keeps getting sacked thanks to a ****ty o-line. so they never get much use out of Andre Johnson or, now, Eric Moulds, because Carr spends so much time on his back. Getting someone like Reggie Bush would have helped twofold... one, he's a good runner who can get pressure off of Carr; two, he can catch and be a safety net whenever Carr is in trouble.

now, the texans other alternative was to say, forget fixing our o-line or getting a good RB, let's just get a QB who can scramble so he won't get sacked. That's where Vince Young could have came in... but no...

really, this doesn't make much sense.

now there's a list of teams that don't need running backs!

                        23 Tampa Bay
                        24 Cincinnati
                        25 N.Y. Giants
                        26 Chicago
                        27 Carolina
                        28 Jacksonville
                        29 N.Y. Jets
                        30 Indianapolis (well they do)
                        31 Seattle
                        32 Pittsburgh

                            I like this spin control:

One assistant coach on the Houston staff, a guy we've known and trusted for a very long time, made this poor attempt at spin on Friday night: By choosing Williams, the Texans actually helped Carr, because an upgraded defense will eventually benefit the bedraggled quarterback. Uh-huh.

Fact: In 2002, the Texans' debut season, the team featured the league's 16th-rated defense, a level Houston hasn't reached since then. And Carr, who usually gets the best view of the Reliant Stadium roof when the retractable dome is closed, was sacked 76 times. So much for helping the poor guy out. Giving him a playmaker the ilk of Bush -- now that would have been a gesture of aid.

Man the Texans are dumb. Williams may be agreat player someday, but Bush would have helped them right away.

                            ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

This might be as stupid as the Mandarich decision.

If they were going to pick Williams, they might as well have moved down.
