After having watched the entire movie I am 80% sure it was a parody of Larry Hemmil. He was a local news anchor in the 70's and 80's who retired around 1989 but I remember watching him in the early 80's. Around 84 he got his own local tv show "the Larry Hemmil Show" but it lasted all of one or two seasons before it got booted for low ratings. He worked at channel 8 and ended up marrying his blond co-ankor. He was merciliously made fun of by channel 7/39 (meaning channel 39 but cable 7) and 9/51 for being obsessed about his hair. Obviously he never ended up a major ankor so that part of the movie isn't true but the rest seems to be based upon his life.

The newsman rumble was worth the price of admission imo.
          He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!
