Is the rendering chip on the XBox 360 actually capable of 1920x1080 or does it require upscaling? I note that the original XBox would output high definition, but it was upscaled from 1024x768.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

There are no restrictions on resolutions on the rendering chip.
The "bottleneck" is the MS-designed (by the WebTV group) output chip which can only output 1080i maximum to an analog connection.
One of the questions asked of MS was how they could get HDMI and 1080p capabilities, and they hinted something was coming at E3."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

most important thing in this thread:
too bad they couldn't have cheapened it up in August in time for Madden. The premium pack will cost $100 less in October; the core system will be $80 less."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi

Why would it matter, considering there's no competition in August?"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

i doubt an attachable hddvd player is likely for xbox.
first: look at sega, did their add ons bring financial success?
second: Hollywoods AACS wants to finalize HDMI and Intel HDCP as mandatory for the discs to play. Therefore, if this occurs no current tv can play next gen hi def dics (either bluray or hddvd).
the hddvd is a great idea.
however, the MPAA may ruin xbox's add on or even sony's new system
hmmm maybe microsoft and nintendo were wise on choosing the dvd format over hddvd or bluray
the next gen dabacle:

Err...MS confirmed that such an add on is being developed, and re-confirmed just this week that they will have it at E3 next month...Originally posted by sprucemoose3311

Err...those have all been finalized now. They can and will output to non-HDMI ports, but they have the option of downgrading the quality to something like 600p for non-HDMI. At least Sony and Universal have publically stated they will not downgrade the quality for non-HDMI users, and everyone else is expected to follow suit.second: Hollywoods AACS wants to finalize HDMI and Intel HDCP as mandatory for the discs to play. And I don't think the Sega comparison is valid. HD-DVD/Bluray is a natural progression up from DVD. It is not a gameplay accessory, it's purely a movie player in high-definition format.
You can either buy a huge, ugly Toshiba standalone HD-DVD player for $500-600US, or you can buy the $99 HD-DVD addon for your Xbox 360 and get the same thing. This kind of add-on makes sense."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Hmm. Will all of the prerequisite cables ship with the MS HD-DVD add-on?
I ask because at Target a few weeks ago, there was a snazzy little HD DVD *player* (not recorder) going for between $100 and $150. Not bad, eh? Heh. Well, it didn't come with the cables (i.e. HDMI) needed to take full advantage of what it could do. The HDMI cable was sold separately for, oh, $70 or so.

Don't confuse a "HD DVD" player (DVD player that upscales) with an HD-DVD player....
HD-DVD players start at $499. They are very different things."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Jeez. I feel sorry for a lot of consumers out there who don't do their homework before parting with cold, hard cash.
It's been a helluva "education" trying to get this high-def/DVD crap straight in my head. Heh. This, I do know: 1080p is the cream of the crop when it comes to HD. Then there's 1080i, 720p (interlaced, progressive, respectively). LCDs, plasma, cathode-ray tube television sets, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Then DVDS — dash/plus R, dash-plus RW (the "dash-plus" representing differing formats), along with double-sided DVDs. And don't get me started on the output/inputs on DVDs and TV sets nowadays.
ARGH!
