  • Koy knows nothing about... broken cars

Yes, once again, I know nothing.

The fan in my car has stopped running consistently. It usually doesn't start until I hit about 30-35MPH, then it kicks in and seems ok for a while. If I'm in town, though, and never get up to that speed it doesn't start and my engine temp spikes. It went up quickly enough today that I didn't dare to wait in line at the drive-thru window for my lunch.

The only mechanic I know well enough to trust doesn't like to work on newer cars...this is the first real problem I've had with this vehicle. Anybody have an educated guess on what this is and how much it should cost to fix it? It's a 2001 Aztek (yeah, yeah, ha ha, I know.)

Fan clutch, as a from faraway guess.

Misreading of your engine temp by some sensor?
      What?

It sounds like the fan is turning on just as it is supposed to when the temperature rises. The problem might not be the fan but could be something with the coolant system.

BTW I really do want to know why you bought an Aztek. Where you drunk at the time?

But it wasn't coming on when the temperature went up...if I just sit there idling, the temp goes up quickly and nothing happens to stop it.

I liked it. Still do, actually, even if my fiancee tells me it looks like a batmobile. So meh.

If you told me the dealer made you an offer you couldn't refuse then I'd understand. But claiming you like the looks of an Aztek just sets alarm bells ringing.

Well, yeah, it was a good deal (at the time, at least.) But I still like it. I never claimed to be normal.

The Aztek was a poster child for everything that was wrong with GM and exhibit A for why design by committee is a horrible idea.
