Dogs can live off dry dog food. You can buy relatively cheap timed food/water feeders. Anywhere I've lived the weather is never too incliment, hope isn't necessary.
Are cats cheaper - yes, and plants are even cheaper.
I grew up with cats & dogs and like them. I just like dogs more.

You can train cats as well. The reason you don't let cats go running around is the same reason you don't let dogs go running around. They'll get killed or hurt.

Cats will crap where they like? Wha? Cats take one or two times to introduce them tp the litter box and they know where to crap.

We let our dogs "running around" without a leash or supervision in the backyard. He never got killed or hurt. Gates, walls, fences and barriers work fine.

If they are confined in a back yard, they are not running around.

The back yard was big enough for kids to "run around" playing (freeze) tag... it was big enough for dogs to "run around" too. It wasn't a "big city" back yard.

Running around outside means no leashes and no fences. The dogs can go where-ever their little hearts want to.

No it does not. It means running... around.

So you think cats going where they want outside and dogs being confined to a backyard is a valid comparison?

Cats/dogs going anywhere they want (unsupervised no leashes) outside are alley cats/dogs that can "get killed or hurt."

Cats/Dogs confined in houses or yards are safer.

How do you confine a cat to a yard? Install a dome?

My dogs never learned how to fly.

Cats were indoors, one was an alley cat.
