  • This is for Serb or "What's the best rifle"?

According to Kalashnikov, it's his own child:

Kalashnikov: my gun rules in Iraq

AK-47 designer says U.S. soldiers prefer his rifle to their M-16s

MOSCOW, Russia (Reuters) -- Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the world's most popular assault rifle, says that U.S. soldiers in Iraq are using his invention in preference to their own weapons, proving that his gun is still the best.

"Even after lying in a swamp you can pick up this rifle, aim it and shoot. That's the best job description there is for a gun. Real soldiers know that and understand it," the 86-year-old gun maker told a weekend news conference in Moscow.

"In Vietnam, American soldiers threw away their M-16 rifles and used (Kalashnikov) AK-47s from dead Vietnamese soldiers, with bullets they captured. That was because the climate is different to America, where M-16s may work properly," he said.

"Look what's happening now: every day on television we see that the Americans in Iraq have my machine guns and assault rifles in their armored vehicles. Even there American rifles don't work properly."

Some U.S. troops in Iraq have reportedly taken to using AK-47s in preference to the standard-issue M-16. The Cold War-era gun, renowned for its durability and easy handling, is plentiful in Iraq.

Kalashnikov designed his first weapon in 1947 and is still chief constructor at Izhmash arms factory in Izhevsk in the Urals mountains.

The factory's director Vladimir Grodetsky told the news conference that around a billion rifles had been produced around the world using parts of Kalashnikovs or based on the same design, only 10-12 percent of which were made in Russia.

    The Best Rifle?

Well, as we all know Battlefield 2 can do no wrong, it must be a SA80.

Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

This is patently false. Americans rarely used it because its unique chatter would immediatly invite a hail of freindly fire. The spec ops DID use it often for the same reason, it didn't immediatly invite a hail of enemy fire.

Some U.S. troops in Iraq have reportedly taken to using AK-47s in preference to the standard-issue M-16.
I have seen alot of trophy taking, but little usage in pics and video. You would be hard pressed to find a non M4 modfied M16 in many front line units these days anyways.

Mk-18 for me any day. Smaller than an M4 but with the same round, light, and with the new eye motion sights and a forward grab bar absolutely deadly inside ships/tight buildings. I won't board with anything else.

Well maybe a shotgon... no better way to clear a P-way

M-14 for sniping. Good range, Sturdy, Dependable, Accurate, Knock down round, and if I beat you over the head with it I will probably knock it off.

Edit: Well, obviously I am a little mission sensative. But even when doing pier takedowns and practicing with the Marines in their urban combat trainer I prefered our Mk-18s to their M-4s and M-16s. If I was in the open feild I can see where the range of a normal long barrel would be nice.

I know many of the special forces people do, mainly because they're often operating behind enemy lines and in areas with few or no regular friendly forces nearby.

As Patroklos has already pointed out, the AK 47 makes a pretty distinct, easily recognized "popping" sound when fired. Hence, you can tell that it's an AK being fired, hence you can NOT tell that it's being fired by an American...
