Wind does better but not much. Total world wide electrical production from alternative power sources was only aroun 10 exajoules and that's if you include hydro power and the burning of garbage as alternative power sources. The rest comes almost entirely from fossil fuels or nuclear power. If you want to decrease green house gas output and still produce massive amounts of electricity then nuclear is the ONLY option which can deliver.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

This site says you need 40m^2 of collector area for every individual. Let's just use the assumptions he uses, which implies you need 260,000,000 km^2 of collector area for the entire human population. Total land area only amounts to 150,000,000 km^2.

40m^2 would be equal to about 4,400 watts peak, with current technology. Seems like a pretty extreme figure, with technological progress marching on.
By way of comparison, my parents' rather standard ranch-style home averages 1,887 watt usage. And that's two people.
I guess you could make the argument that you would need to account for the electricity that they use in the products that they buy and the electricity used at work.

An alternative calculation. According to the CIA, global electricity generation is about 17 trillion kwh/year. A roughly 3,000 kwh/year solar system from Kyocera will consist of 20 square meters of panels.
