Hatred is just as natural as love for humans, you don't have to be particularly abnormal to be consumed by it (especially when you're in a group frenzy as he is), just a lack of anything else worthwhile in your life. Somebody teach him how to fish and i bet he calms down.

We're not arguing about the morality of homosexuality, we're trying to figure out why Phelps is a Dingleberry. Iran's culture has a long history of conflict with the Jews. It makes sense, sort of, for them to spend a lot of time hating the Jews. Phelps, OTOH, goes above and beyond the call of ordinary homophobe duty. Unless homosexuals killed his parents and he wants revenge or something, there's no reason for him to be so hardcore-opposed to it. I mean, just look at his site, it gets pretty graphic. A typical sample:

Bottom line: it's just not normal for any straight man to think that obsessively and continually about gay sex, even to "deplore" it. With Falwell and company, it appears to just be basic run-of-the-mill xenophobia; they're not so continually enraged, and they target a variety of undesirable behaviors they don't appear to have any clue about but which are probably gateways to worshipping Satan by their reckoning (D&D, slutty clothes on teen girls, birth control, profanity, staying up past midnight, et cetera).
