  • How in the world does anyone think that "Liberal Arts" is a major?

History is a general area. English is a general area. Political Science is a general area. etc.

You're totally correct. There's no way Liberal Arts is a real major.

...However, this doesn't mean that this shouldn't be studied.... I think that, in fact, it should be studied earlier...

Isn't that what Rove does? Although more on the national level.

              • You see money isn't that important; at least not once you have enough to buy a house and a few toys for yourself.

Some write books, some sell paintings, but I think for 90% of them teaching in high school or university is what they do.

Your chart doesn't show the exponential increase that surely happened after the popularization of the Internet.

Now, MBA school is another kettle of fish entirely...
MBA's are to generalist in my mind. If they specialize, like my ex-girlfriend did with her MBA, then if can turn out all right however far to many business schools claim a "good manager" can manage any business even if they don't have the experience or technical skill to do so. It was percisely this type of wrong headed thinking which killed Oldsmobile after they brought in a man who previously managed a company which made toaster ovans and asked him to manage a car company. This dumb bastard didn't know a good car from a bad car or why customers bought one car over another car nor was he passionate about cars and instead he simple was a numbers cruncher who looked at spread sheets. It's no wonder the idiot ran a 100 year old brand into the ground.

B-schools try to sell themselves as everything under the sun but the reality is if you have no background or knowledge of the car industry then going to B-school isn't going to qualify you to run a car company or any other company you don't know about. B-school does have its place (mostly in middle management) but they can't really teach the skills most modern CEOs need like charisma, being telegenic, energizing workers, convincing investors, and other such things. The other problem is that there are just so many MBAs that they've become a dime a dozen unless you go to an elite school. They're just not worth it.

Some mow lawns, some sling burgers at McDonald's. Whatever minimum wage job they can find.

Education is the major for those wanting to go into teaching. Elementary Education is a good example of an teaching degree. Problem is there aren't enough people going into the teaching field so schools hire anyone they can find.

Liberal Arts majors aren't qualified for any jobs so they kinda meet in the middle. All the Liberal Arts Majors teaching in our schools are the primary cause of American students not being able to read or write. Since they can't read or write they can only major in Liberal Arts. Its a vicious cycle.

Actually there was a push to end education degrees because people came out of college without enough knowledge. Virginia Tech, for example, had it as one of their most popular degrees. Now many schools don't even hire teachers with education degrees.

                            • Of course the Liberal Arts people don't want someone qualified for those jobs competing with them. They're naturally going to try to get rid of that degree option.
