This is one of the dumbest arguments I have ever heard on Poly, and I've read lots of posts by Fez, Wiglaf, Agathon, and CivNation.

Liberal arts undergrad = you'll manage to make as much as the host of a huge TV show?

                Guess what physics, is, GePap.

                Hint: the answer is math.

Now, again: guess what econ PhD's study?

You don't seem to understand what high-level physicists do. It's not that different from complex economic analysis in that it's high-level applied math.

Read the book I linked to, or at least the back of it.

Here is the simplified version for the self- satisfied eggheads:

Eggheads (to use a term of endearment) are valued because they with their brainy little ways create new tools, methods, new things that create new potentials, new activites, new ways to harness power. For that, they are valued and handsomely rewarded.

BUT the eggheads do NOT wield the power. They don't control it. They don;t decide how it is used.

To put is simply: Eggheads might makes nukes, but they are not the ones who decide who gets nuked.

In the end, it is the ones who make the decisions, the ones who wield the power who have the most control and decide the shape of the world.

And they are not the eggheads.

So the point of this thread is to finance humanities and art:

So do you think we must cut the financial aid to Anthropology, Sociology, Economic, Political Science, Litterature, Art Visual, Law?

My response is: No! In Canada I'm pretty sure it's underfinanced!

So what's your clear answer to this, I just want to know.

                      • It's hilarious to me as so many Liberal Arts graduates seem to think they're the only people who can make big decision.

Here's an idea: they're called civil servants for a reason. You are here to serve the people.

Politicians are scum, and most scientists are above that. That's why you get to decide "who gets nuked", and that's why the world is so ****ed up. Look at Bush.

It's not underfinanced, there's too many people entering those fields. For every 10 Anthropology and Sociology graduates, there's 1 position...

                            Right!
The cost to enter university is too low, with an higher fee. People will think two times before entering art/humanities bacc.

                            • The requirements are too low. You only need a 70-something percent HS average to enter stuff like Sociology and Anthropology.

True enough, but then again there are only a handful of these people who wield real power. On average, you're a lot better off becoming an egghead with a good chance of a high-paying job than you are a poli-sci major who has a one-in-a-million chance at being a leader and a much more likely future as a low-paid civil service peon...
