I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY
LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

$1.30 a US gallon means that even if refining didn't cost anything, transportation didn't cost anything, there was 100% efficiency in the refining process and gas stations were run by volunteers working for free with no equipment costs that oil couldn't cost more than ~55$ a barrel

No need. They're handed out gratis when you join the Democratic Party.

So, at the current cost of ~2.65 a US gallon in MD and 68$ BBL on NY exchange, we have:

1.65 per US gallon = minimum crude costs
.35 per US gallon = excise tax

Leaving .65 per US gallon to refine, transport and retail me my gasoline

I just checked. Oil prices are around $69/barrel. I used to know how many gallons/barrel but that info is gone. 66 gallons/barrel? 44?

If it's 44, crude oil prices are $1.57/gal., not $1.65.

                42 gallons per barrel.

Oh, and don't blame us for your state's insane gas taxes .

It's not a 1-1 conversion. Gasoline and crude oil contain different amounts of energy per gallon

About 47% of a barrel of crude oil becomes gasoline, according to this non-industry paper (well, unless you wear the tinfoil hat of "DOE is owned by oil" ... )

A lot of the recent price hikes have been transportation cost increases, as well ...

My bad. I meant "crude oil per barrel."

Yeah, but the other petro products are also sold. They're not thrown out.

Going by the enrgy cost of components is the best way to divide up the cost of a barrel of oil.

It's not just a typo. You can't divide a barrel of oil into gallons and then equate 1 gallon of oil with one gallon of gasoline.

It's close, but not perfect. There's a slight difference in their chemical energies.

My dad works in the oil industry. He says it costs 42 cents to bring a gallon of gas to market. At to that state and federal taxes, and you're up near a dollar a gallon.

And if you ask any gas station owner, they make most of the money by the things they sale inside the store, not the gas. Trust me, there is plenty of money to be thrown around in the oil business, and there is a reason for it.
