Student to school board: You could use my perspective

REYNOLDS — Adam King looks to be an ideal school board candidate. He’s articulate, energetic and has a strong interest in education.

There’s one problem: King is 14 years old.

For the Reynolds High freshman, though, that’s exactly the point. While he is younger than the minimum candidate age of 21 for school board, King believes the decision-making body could use his perspective.

“I just think it would provide students direct representation and let students have a voice in making rules that affect them most,” he said.

At the Buncombe County Board of Education’s last meeting, King proposed the appointment of a nonvoting student adviser and presented a petition signed by teachers and his school’s student council. He got a mixed reaction.

Members applauded his interest, but said there could be problems, such as what to do during closed sessions.

Board member Roger Aiken said members get enough student input from an existing advisory council and personal contacts.

“I have two high school students living in my house, so I get a lot of input,” he said.

King and others said the representative could sit out closed sessions. Also, a student present at every meeting would be a better representative than an advisory council that has less contact with the board, National Youth Rights Association Director Alex Koronknay-Palicz said.

“Good board members want to do right by students, but they really lack that personal connection. Having that student presence there helps affect policy in a really direct way.”

This was in my local paper, I actually know this kid a bit cause of OzzyKP, he's really nice, I think he'd be a fine candidate, where do I cast my vote? Though I don't think the local politicians are going for it....

    Thoughts?

    No way...

Would you want a 14 year old deciding if you get fired when it comes time for budget cuts? I think not.

I seem to remember that we used to vote for a student or two to represent us on the board of trustees back in high school.

I can't remember if they had much power but they did used to be at the meetings.

                piss poor analogy ozzykp.

so the fact that people were students at one time should lend insight into what is best for students. not what some ambitious young 14 year old thinks is best for students. I bet this kid doesnt even fit in, in his class.

Why is it a poor analogy?

I want to do right by Michiganders. I should be able to vote in Michigan elections because I care about their concerns.

Great idea! We have (in the UK) 3 teacher representatives on the board of governors, why not elect a couple of students each year? The school affects them most of all.

a schoolboard and voting people into congress/on initiatives is completely different. just because the motivations for both might be the same they are different situations completely.

so stop throwing out red herrings.

                          Yay, the newspaper supports him.

More student input on school issues worth a try

Reynolds High School freshman Adam King deserves a lot of credit for caring enough about his own and other students’ education to be willing to volunteer his time to serve as a non-voting student advisor to the Buncombe County Board of Education.

He should be rewarded by being given an opportunity to do just that. If board members are unsure how having a student be part of their deliberations would work, they could begin by doing it on a trial basis. If it works out, a process could be determined for allowing students to elect future representatives.

Students are school boards’ most important constituency and it seems reasonable that students should have an opportunity to contribute their views about issues that affect them.

One potential problem — what to do during closed sessions — is easily solved. The student representative should be excluded.

The value of having a student representative on the board of education rests not only in the student’s contributions to be board, but also in the interest a student representative might well generate among students systemwide.

As our abysmal voting records demonstrate, we’ve not done a very good job of it in the past of teaching young people self-governance.

Here’s a student who wants to participate in self-governance, who’s willing to learn the ropes. We say, more power to him.

The article you linked to I can support, Ozzy. The one from the OP stating that he is trying to be an actual board member I cannot.

Both articles referred to a "non-voting" position. I could support that.
