Have China or Vietnam returned the assets they stole when they went commie?
The companies can't really force China to do anything. Cuba is small and close and it is politically weaker thus Cuba gets the short end of the stick. That's just the politics of it.
1. Castro dying soon. Everyone dies, and he may go anytime. But this has been predicted (and attempted) so many times, a grain of salt is required.
2. His death being the automatic end of socialism on Cuba. I've been there a few times, the last being a winter holiday a couple of years ago, and they're pretty well organized and supported.
The economy has recovered from the near-disaster when the Soviet Union collapsed, tourism is flourishing, and the Venezuelan alliance is providing important assistance. Most importantly, most of the opposition is in Miami.
Obviously, the west will step up it's pressure when Castro is gone, and it will be a very tense time for the Cuban people.
Tecumseh's Village, Home of Fine Civilization Scenarios
If Castro were trully Ill, it would not be just one dinky Spanish paper that would have the story.
As for what happens after he dies (he will probably outlive the Bush admin), I would not expect Cuba top return any property, certainly not to the expatriates, nor do I think the exile community in the US can expect a welcome home from anyone but family, and they certainly will not take over politically. Economically, they might have a shot, as I would expect them to rush to invest there.
As for what happens politically, I doubt that without Castro the party can keep long term power-none of the others in the leadership have his charisma. That said, they won't go quietly, anymore than say the Sandinistas, who are still one of the big parties in Nicaragua.
