Not that it's a plausible option, but I can't see how nuking the **** out of Iran to stop its nuclear weapons program would act as an incentive for others to develop nukes. If America was crazy enough to do it once, you have to think they'd do it again; who would want to sign their own country's death warrant by developing nukes after that?

Actually it does. Because the day after, all the countries around the world will look at the smoking, radiating ruin that was Iran; and promptly crap their pants.

This will happen when two conditions are met.

1) US is the only country in the world with nuclear weapons. The use of nuclear weapons by the US will redefine the rules in which they can be used that have been adhered to so far. With China and Russia making noises about being prepared to use nuclear weapons, Iran is more likely to follow their lead.

2) US public opinion supports nuclear war. Not saying it doesn't but I'm not convinced that it does either. Congress will call the President to heel if he threatens their political careers.
