Actually the Japanese had the biggest battleships, and British battleship guns and shells were just as big as the Bismark's. The Bismark was faster, had better range finding equipment, better protection and better damage control. The British just didn't want to admit that there construction techniques were inferior. In fact the shipbuilders of the British navy should have been trie for fraud. They routinely took short cuts and used substandard materials in order to improve their profit margin.

Sending battleships out into the ocean with minimal escort and minimal air protection to destroy freighters was indeed very unwise. It was like a free morale booster for the British.
