I suggest you read The Clash of Civilizations by Samuel Huntington, he discribes Ukraine as a cleft country, stradling the boundary of Western and Orthodox Christendom. The ethnic Ukrainians, despite being the founders of the East Slavic branch of Orthodox Chrisitian civilization, have been effectively westernized from centuries of being under the rule of Western states, namely Poland and Austria, for several senturies before coming under control of the Russian empire, many ethnic Ukrainians show allegence to the Pope for Christ's sake (the Uniate "Catholic-Orthodox hybrid" Christians). Cleft countries are best split peacefully, otherwise you risk the very good chance of a VIOLENT split.
