MRT seems to believe blank disks are free.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

regardless of whether or not he burns media to blank disk, buying a harddrive to contain the information on his current cds is an expense he can avoid if he rips the cds to mp3. he probably has a harddrive large enough to do that now.

whatever he does after ripping to mp3 is none of my concern.

Going digital makes a lot of sense, Rufus, as it creatives an archive of music that's important to you. Just make sure you move to a lossless format. Once you compress, you lose bits of the original data, something you'll come to regret.

Media servers are the next wave and will be getting cheaper soon.

Ach! It's all so complicated! I'm going back to 8-track.

It's not complicated at all. Buy a Mac Mini and get a third party external hard drive. There are some really nice ones that look just like the mini and fit under it, so it is about as big as a pile of CDs (as far as I know you can stack as many of these as you want). iTunes will rip and organize all your music in Apple Lossless, and you can then connect it to the line in on your stereo (wirelessly if you want) and your TV. It has a remote, so you don't have to leave your seat.

You will get a full media browser on your television that will display your album art as you play your music (or you can buy a small flat panel to attach to the mini as a display). You can access any other music on your local network with no setup via Bonjour, and you can access all your music (and other media) on the mini from any computer in your house – again you can do this immediately with no setup at all (Bonjour finds all your music on all your computers automatically).
