Take a piece such as Meat Loaf's "You took the word right out of my mouth" - I have it both on vinyl and cd, and the difference is extreme - the same goes for classical music where the silent parts means just as much as the parts where there is played. Attending a live classical play, you dont expect to hear pickup noise.
That said, I have a LP player and some 100 LP's covering the last 30 years, and I have no intentions to discard them

Digital, no question. I don't even listen to CD's anymore. I still buy them, though. That way, I can rip them myself, and make sure they sound good.
And you can be an audiophile and listen to digital. Most audiophiles rip their albums with lossless audio codecs. But I'm willing to bet most of them couldn't hear the difference between a track ripped in a lossless format and the same tracked ripped, say, in AAC @ 190 Kbps. I rip mine in AAC @ 224 Kbps and they sound pretty damn good. Anyway, most audiophiles a completely bonkers
Vinyl may sound better than CD or digital, but its a huge pain in the ass. Those albums get dirty, you have to clean them frequently. You have to change sides frequently. And remember that a lot of CD's don't sound as good as their vinyl counterparts because they were incompetently mastered.

For instance, I have Blind Lemon Jefferson, 1927. Electrical recording came out in 1925. I've started to try and remove some hiss and pop, but it's history I'd be removing.

both have their merits which I WONT discuss because they are irrelevant to my point.
I think a lot of our opinions are based on conditioning and what we grew up with. most the older folks prefer vinyl because they grew up with it, and most people my age prefer CDs.
