The Dp is simply just a way to appease people who think death is the gravest punishment of all. It would be hilarious to think that in fact those people are utterly wrong because it turns out everyone who dies goes to some paradise. That would be metaphysical irony on huge level.

If that's the truth, then I think everyone (including D.P. supporters) would be too happy to ever care about anything that happened on earth.

The thing is, our entire legal system is based on the average, reasonable person. Though one can make an argument that death isn't the worst thing that can happen to you, most people would say that it is (especially those who think that hell awaits the criminals). That's why the death penalty is seen as the ultimate punishment.
