  • China's socialist system comes from God

Liu Bainian, vice chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, noted that the Roman Catholic Church was active in toppling communism in Poland in 1989. Liu suggested that Hong Kong Bishop Joseph Zen, whose appointment to cardinal was announced last month, would be part of a similar strategy in China.

"Why would you appoint someone who doesn't support communism as a cardinal ?" Liu said in an interview in Beijing with Hong Kong Cable TV.

"Is it like Poland? Didn't the church play a big role in Poland?" Liu asked.

Liu argued that socialism and Christianity were compatible.

"China's socialist system comes from God. We should all protect it and obey it. This is what the Bible tells us to do ," he said.

China forced its Roman Catholics to cut ties with the Vatican in 1951, shortly after the officially atheist Communists took power. People can worship only in government-controlled churches , which recognize the pope as a spiritual leader but appoint their own priests and bishops.

But millions of Chinese belong to unofficial congregations loyal to Rome. They say they are frequently harassed, fined and sometimes sent to labor camps by authorities.

On Thursday, Zen said in a statement that comparing China and Poland "is an act of far-fetched imagination."

"It is obvious that Catholics do not accept communism because of its atheistic premises," he said.

Zen noted that Liu speaks for the state-run church, and said that Chinese Catholics can't freely voice their opinions about the church.

"If freedom were granted to the bishops, priests and faithful to speak out, one would hear views that are very different from those expressed by Mr. Liu," he said.

I'd like to see a Chinese Lech Walesa. And of course it would help if the pope was Chinese.

Catholics in China are only around 30 million, counting those of the underground church and patriotic communist church.

Thats like only 2% of the population, in Poland everybody was a catholic.

      Totally different.

Yes, very different. Still, I think China needs a "Lech Walesa"... At least if the horror stories about workers' conditions are true. The Solidarity movement wasn't just Catholic , it was a broad anti-regime trade union thingy.

Are there trade unions in China?

"Stamford, Connecticut, U.S.A. ¡ª Father Wang Wenzhi ÍõÎÄÖ¥, fifty years old, a priest in the diocese of Yongnian ÓÀÄêin Hebei, was arrested by Chinese security officials after he finished offering his Mass in a family¡¯s private home on December 11, 2005 in Fengfeng City ·å·åÊÐ, which is located southwest of the City of Handan ºªàÊÐ, Hebei. He has been kept in the detention center of Guangping county Vƽ¿h ever since. We understand that the Chinese government is attempting to brain-wash and force Father Wang to cooperate with the government in order to join the official communist- established Patriotic Church. We have been informed that the government has not been successful in its attempt to convert Father Wang to their official Church.............."

"In the meantime, Bishop Han Dingxiang ín¶¦ÏéÖ÷½Ìof Yongnian has disappeared. He had been arrested by the Chinese government more than six years ago in December 1999. Since then he was kept in a government-run hostel somewhere in the diocese of Yongnian and, up until now, people were sometimes able to get a glimpse of him at his window. But, no longer: he has been transferred to an unknown location and we have no news of him. His health has been poor."

The economy of China is very different from that of Poland, however. While there are still state enterprises, the real exploitation goes on in smaller capitalist businesses.

Yes, there is one, but it is a government organization connected to the state Ministry of Labor.

In practice it is a complete joke. For example, it is quite common for the union leader at a factory to be the factory's manager (who of course, is a Party official). Not too likely he's going to reprimand himself for abusing his employees.

Any worker who tries to start an alternative labor organization is at risk of disappearing, later to surface in a labor camp after a secret trial.

              Remember, Communism is a worker's paradise! :-(

So, when do we see a revolution in Germany?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Marx is quite clear about this, sometime before World War I IIRC.
