How to get to the top. OFFICE politics. Being good is never enough, evidenced by how many morons make it close to the top. It helps, but it's not required.
Sex and Golf are only two of the many weapons that help you win the battle of politics.
The most effective weapon (and the one I hate to use the most) SUCKING UP. (and the main reason that I never quite make it to the most senior level)
You must learn what buttons to push with people above you. Unfortunately the higher you get, the more likely it is that your bosses have large egos. On the plus side ego is the easiest weakness to exploit. There are many that claim that they don't want "yes men" but that's just a screen. Thet want people to tell them they're great. Most younger people will fail because they feel that if they suck up, they're selling out the integrity.
So they tell the truth, and think that it helps them sleep at night. Telling the truth is a good thing, but those that do it too often will either go hungry or have to get used to being forever stuck in middle management.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. We've got a higher up who loves chocolate. When ever someone needs something out of her they always bring her chocolate. I told her I wouldn't do that, I shouldn't have to bribe someone to do their job. Instead, I "reward" her by giving her a treat after the job is done.
For some reason she likes the distinction. Maybe it's that it makes me look like I have more integrity. Really, it was just that I needed her to do something and forgot the chocolate that day

Yes Ming, a good reputation will limit the amount of suck up that you have to do and it's part of the game. But it doesn't eliminate it.
And Japher, bribe or reward, it's still sucking up. But I like the way you position it to take optimal advantage.

Working in a service industry is another matter.

Even the top dog has to suck up. But at least for him it's more of a choice.
He has to suck up to customers. (THere's choice but not really if you want customers)
He has to suck up to underlings if he wants keep them happy to help the overall health of the company which he benifits from.
