      Upper Volta...

'"It is the same situation as in the 18th Century," Mr. Goldzink says. "Then it was Catholic priests who were angry. Now it is parts of the Muslim community."'

Nonesense. In that time 'old-school Catholicism' was a descending force, and the French nation was made up (mostly) of people sharing cultural commonality which made them more likely to consider the views of fellow frenchmen.

Today Islamic Fundamentalism is a rising force and the nation is now heaviliy and irreparably culturally divided causing a 'circling of the wagons' or fortress mentality whenever anyone from the 'other camp' attacks your camp.

This seems like a good opportunity to remind people that Voltaire never actually said the famous quote that is constantly erroneously applied to him

                        Voltaire

                        insulting religions

pointing mistakes in religions without insulting them

While I like Voltaire as a writer, I have great disdain for him as a person. He'd do and write evrything for money.

what's wrong with insulting a religion or any other ideology for that matter?

and some people think that pointing out the mistakes IS an insult... so what does one do about that?

if peoples' faith is strong, what should it matter what an "unbeliever" says? won't god smite them or something?

oh wait, was that an insult?

if people believe in silly things, they should not be upset or offended if people hold the opinion that those beliefs are silly

I believe people should have the right to believe in whatever they want.

I also believe people should have the right to freedom of speech. (generally)

Sometimes this clashes, but hey, things would be boring if they didn't.
To us, it is the BEAST.
