  • Contact(the movie) WHAT THE HELL were they thinking?

Okay I was just playing Gal Civ 2 and it got me thinking......

Okay, we get a message on how to build a massivley complicated machine from space and have absolutley NO idea what it does.

    And we build it?

Let's look at a best case/worse case scenario.

Best case scenario: All world problems are forever solved due to the wonders of this god like technology.

Worst case scenario: Aliens pour through the device and enslave us, or it just destroys the planet.

Given those two possibilities...... why not just NOT build the damn thing?

Who the hell voted for the politicians who allowed that thing to be built?

    I didn't vote for them!

I love the Gal Civ 'moral choices'...

The planet is inhabited by a unique intelligent organism!

Option (c) Ah yes.....slaves! You can never have too many slaves.

It's good strategy, it's interesting, and the AI is quite a challenge. However, for some reason, I can't seem to really love the game as it deserves. I think I really dislike the fact that mankind goes from 1 to 10 billion inhabs in less than 10 years.

Or build it in space. With robots.

Aye. And once you're at it: why build only one if you can have two for twice the price?

One of my favourite quotes from the movie

Great quote. Movie was a bit meh, but I'll always remember the great bit when they 'fold up' the pages of the message into 3D. Very nice moment.

I'm trying to picture the scene:

SCIENTIST 1: We could build it, but aliens might pour through it and enslave us all.

SCIENTIST 2: You're right. Let's not build it then.

                        SCIENTIST 1: Okay.

SCIENTIST 2: Errrr....so what are we going to do for the rest of the movie??

In a society of Dartford chavs, that's quite conceivable
