  • $33 Million verdict vs. UC for raising fees

Wow! 9,000 graduate students won a major victory against the University California for its raising of fees in violation of a promise not to. The court found that the students relied upon this promise in choosing to go to UC.

Although the university claimed it was forced to raise fees because of budget cuts, it turns out that, while raising fees, the university was also granting top management millions in secret raises and perks.

The case is Kashmiri v. Regents of the University of California CGC-03-422747.

That's pretty cool . Though the lesson is... don't promise not to raise fees!

I'm stunned that any school would do something like that in a way that it would be enforceable.

They could have used so many waffle phrases: "our past practice is to not raising fees on students who have already entered." "We don't think we'll be raising fees..." Etc. Dumb just plain dumb.

Indeed. Just stupidity by the school here. They never should have been in a position to lose this suit.

Isn't it ironic that the very morons who were making this stupid promise were getting millions in secret raises...presumably for doing a "good" job?
