Philosophers are cheap: we only pay for 2-3 for visits, although they will interview 10-15 people at the APA.

Still, it's probably easier to get a job in Ramo's field than mine (It's easier than in almost any field I think, because a lot of people feel philosophy as a vocation).

Maybe some of the more popular science stuff would be more competitive.

Some people here seem to be able to understand the opening post. I, however, do not, it looks like gibberish to me...

Basically Ramo is getting an interview at the best university outside of the Ivy Leagues - Rice. It's in Houston, Texas. He can study oil. There are many large oil corporations in Houston. It's basically an incredibly good deal.

Dont sell out. Hold tight to those socialist/liberal ideals and work for a pittance somewhere.

Indeed. Rice is decent, but not near-ivy caliber.

If you really want to not sell out, come to the U of C ... we have a geology/geophysics department somewhere, and none of our programs are remotely practical (thus not generally funded by large companies)... and plenty of DSA types

With the exception of a few places (i.e. MIT), the quality of the program is highly dependent on the particular field that you're looking at. In Seismology, the Ivy's are generally mediocre (except Yale and Princeton). Rice is pretty good. Other good schools are UCSD, Berkeley, MIT, and Cal Tech.

Well, I'm talking about in the US, especially in terms of what he is going into. There are some good opportunies for certain interships and partnerships especially.
