Spiff, you sound just like Bill Maher before he lost his show for apparently being politically incorrect.

That said, this suicide axing reminds me of another lovely incident in a peacekeeping area.

you can engage people from outside of melee weapon range.

No, you can't. Not in the same manner.

If you're too afraid to put your men in situations where they might be hurt then you will never accomplish your mission. Not shooting at everybody who gets within five metres of your forces when attending a village meeting is just one of those risks they have to take. If you're not in a vehicle or organised defensive perimeter and you're treating villagers as assumedly friendly then you cannot fully protect against things like this. It takes less than a second to pull an axe from your belt, cross 5 metres and swing at somebody's head. The precautions you'd need to take to prevent this are ridiculous when viewed in the context of a cooperative peacekeeping venture.

Somebody used that willingness to take necessary risks to attack one of our soldiers. The fact that our man is down with a head wound while the attacker went down full of bullets probably less than ten seconds later even though our troops were playing nice and were not in full defensive posture is the sort of thing which discourages such acts in the future.

adequate force protection. Hes down with a head wound, and they're going to have to do some major surgery to save his arm.

                    a) Wrong. The arm part of the story is about an attack from a couple of days ago in which a suicide bomber drove into the side of one of our armoured jeeps.

                    b) How many times do I have to tell you that "adequate force protection" is impossible without appearing impossibly standoffish? Your statements are idiotic on their face. To prevent such an attack villagers would have had to be restrained to probably no less than ten metres from the nearest soldier. We're here to help you, but you can't get within 30 feet of us.

well, perhaps no sneaking up behind people during the hugging and kissing.
