theres even some speculation that he wasn't looking for the far east at all.

No, they are saying the WHOLE ice sheet may disintergrate (earlier studies predicted only the small western section would and the the huge eastern ice sheet would become larger from increased precipitation) The last time there was a massive collapse of most of the ice sheet was during the late Oligocene 25 million years ago, The present ice sheet never had a major collapse during the current ice age. Piri Ri's map was based on accounts of Spanish mariners he'd interrogated. As for the spur of Antiarctica, it is believed that Ri put that there for balance, as map makers were often want to do in those days. No one had yet sailed that far South in those days. Certainly no ship made then or at any point prior could have done so.

Eventually, but not now. We'll see how I feel after this year's hurricane season. It's supposed to be worse that last year.

                    Republicans in denial again?

My own view is that when they finally admit that global warming is a reality, we should find all the sophists who argued against it and dump them in the middle of the Sahara... or Florida... sucks either way.

"The warming ocean comes underneath the ice shelves and melts them from the bottom, and warmer air from the top melts them from the top," said NASA glaciologist Jay Zwally. "So they're thinning and eventually they get to a point where they go poof!"

Ice shelves, not the entire ice sheet.

The last time there was a massive collapse of most of the ice sheet was during the late Oligocene 25 million years ago, The present ice sheet never had a major collapse during the current ice age. Geez Odin, there are a few dozen celestial objects in our neighborhood large enough and they aren't stars. Another planet or large asteroid passing by could cause the ice shelf to collapse. Why are you always wrong?

James Hansen, director of NASA's Earth Science Research, said that disaster could probably be avoided, but that it would require dramatically cutting emission outputs.

Of course global warming is a reality, take a look at temperature/climate graphs going back ~400,000 years and you'll notice a cycle. We're nearing a peak in that cycle so if "history" repeats itself, global warming may trigger a cold snap and our progeny will see ice sheets covering huge swaths of the northern hemisphere . Good times are here again...

But what caused this in the past? We didn't... There's good evidence the mini-ice age was connected to reduced sloar activity, so the sun may just have longer cycles of greater and reduced output.

I heard that one part of Greenland is losing ice and another part is gaining it. Can anyone verify that?

btw, anyone read State of Fear by Michael Crichton? My dad did and keeps raving about it.

Berzerker, do you have any clue as to what you're talking about?

The consequences of an increased level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is so ****ing obvious that any undergraduate physics student could tell you what was happening and provide a fairly good estimate as to the size of the effect on global mean temperatures.

But please, continue with your ridiculous arguments about celestial objects ripping off giant chiunks of ice sheets
