  • 250 GB HDD Partition

I just bought a new 250 GB HDD and now I have to decide how to split it.

I would like some suggestions regarding file system, number and sizes of prtitions, etc.

There's no point in partitioning with modern file systems like NTFS unless you want multiple operating systems.

I've got 4 physical harddrives and only one "partition" in Windows through the magic of RAID (for two of them) and mounted folders for the other two.

I also have 3 partitions: One for Windows XP x64 (the vast majority of the space), one for Windows XP Pro (32-bit - ~5GB), one for Linux (64-bit Ubuntu, 40GB).

Because I was obviously unaware that there was no point in splitting it

I don't need multiple OSs but isn't this huge partition going to waste a lot of space because of large cluster size.

I don't know how NTFS works but AFAIK in FAT32 1file=1cluster and with such a big drive cluster sizes are going to be big.

              Bingo, Rich.

If you lag on your burning, a partition is nice.
Another point is having a small partition for O.S. and you can defrag only it.
My O.S. side has 10 gb.

You should never reformat C (unless giving the computer to someone else), there is never any good reason for it. Reformatting your C drive is like tearing down your house and rebuilding it when you get a rat problem.

With Windows, tearing down the house every year or so is a common practice of mine. I make mistake, i delete some stuff, some programs are just ****ty at uninstalling themselves, etc... After a while i just give up on maintenance and redo the whole thing. Gets rid of a lot of crap i find.
                  What?

So you don't have to reformat, just perform a clean install of Windows...

With XP i find 10G to be a good size also. I also have a second, much older and smaller HD for backups.

I find it always keeps some stuff, even if i try to do that. I just don't trust it. I would much rather format the drive and get rid of everything. If i don't have too much stuff to back up i save it on my other HD and FDISK the whole thing sometimes.

                          So be it, then.

Reformatting is just stupid, IMO. It's what you get when you've got users who don't know what they're doing and geeks too lazy to fix what is actually wrong.

The only time I've reformatted my drive was when I gave an old PC to a family friend.

Yep, sometimes you just need to nuke everything and start again.
