some things use System Restore to reinstall themselves

AV progs can't scan and "clean" the System Restore files

so you might need to turn SR off when cleaning

but I see someone posted instructions to rid your PC of this menace... so nevermind then

but keep this in mind... about System Restore...

I've had troublesome things on my PC before, and they are easily removed when you turn SR off... they can't reinstalled themselves.

also, manually check your registry and windows prefetch folder

I would love to see someone write a novel about a series of murders of adware, spyware, and malware producers. When the protagonist catches up with the offender he'd have to ask himself whether he wants to turn the perp in.

If it was made into a movie and became a big hit who knows, maybe we'd begin to see something done about these guys.

Nah, the perp will probably turn out to be a "Bill gates" that has sent his goons out to kill some underground heroes.

How come that authors and movie makes usually has their feets solidly planted in the air ?

You know, the people who make spyware, adware and malware are the same people who make spyware blockers. It's a racket. They sell the offending programs to marketers, then sell the cure to consumers. They then sell more sophisticated programs to the marketers and turn around and sell new protection to the consumers.

Any ideas as to why I'm getting the blue screen of death fatal error when I try to run ad aware?

I'm thinking a. the evil program which installed winfixer also nixes washers or b. my anti virus software thinks Ad Aware is malware and shuts down the comp.

Also I'm having trouble downloading video from the internet. It appears to download but there's nothing in my video folder when download completes.....

I put this all down to moving to Korea, where I now have cable, and it seems to be a virus hotspot. I had to reformat last year after a complete breakdown where windows wouldn't load and my fan would go insane on start up.

Also the children now use my PC online and God knows what they click on - ..........they like a site called runescape where they explore a kind of medieval world online and meet their friends there.

I've found the google filter pretty handy for keeping them safe from porn but now I sometimes get porn pop ups when I use explorer and this is something which I really don't want them exposed to at their tender age.

Does that also happen in Windows Safe Mode?

I found it helps a lot to run msconfig in safe mode and go through the startup with a fine toothed comb. Do the same thing with services. Shut down everything that is strange. For this you may need Net connection to look up the functions of various sevices, however anything that is not Microsoft should be a prime target.
