    "German Court Backs Terrorist Tactics
February 20, 2006: A German court ruled that a hijacked aircraft could not be shot down to prevent it from crashing into a stadium full of people. The court said that the rights of the passengers on the hijacked aircraft took priority over attempts to prevent greater loss of life in the stadium. The ruling came as Germany was organizing security for the soccer world cup. There will be a no-fly zone over the stadiums, but because of this ruling, the fighter jets patrolling the air space will not be allowed to shoot down aircraft threatening the thousands of people in a stadium. The games will be played, in twelve different stadiums, between June 9 and July 9. Germany will try to come up with another way to stop a hijacked aircraft, or seek another legal solution to the prohibition on shooting down attacking aircraft."

I mean, the German Airforce could escort the plan all the way there, do a fly by of the stadium and watch the whole thing from a unique view point. I mean, the air traffic controllers could always ask politely for the terrorists to stop.

I'm sure that they could reason with the terrorists.

Stupid ruling. Stupid case to bring before the courts to begin with. There are some things that are better left out of the public spotlight, and this is one such matter.

They could just go ahead and shoot it down anyway, should it become reality. As I am in fact hopeful they will. Who will blame them if they manage to save the lives of 10,000 people by killing 200 - half an hour before those 200 would die anyway?

Not to mention the preventive effect such a practice (or the presuming of there being such a practice in place) would have on terrorist hijackings.

I agree with Winston to some extent. Even if the ruling should be that they can't shoot it down, it shouldn't be made public. That's just Darwinism. That kind of decision must be kept secret, so they can appear to be able to do it if it needs to be done.

Think the stadiums will be safe as long as someone doesn't take out a large insurance policy on them or there is a stash of gold underneath.

That's what US flights now do. No more asking to see the pilots for little Johnny.

Why would flashers need to go into the cockpit anyway?
                        Don't distract the pilots, dammit!!
