Well, I hate winter sports, but since it's the Olympics and I knew a girl once that liked figure skating...

      Excellent.

Just realised, I'm neglecting the portraits I meant to post.. Can't be helped.

Ah portraits... These are way out of the set timeframe, but since they are by what I see as one of the founding fathers of the genre, time for some Armstrong...

Where do you get those, btw? I tried Google images and they have nothing. Some of these could become fine wallpapers.

Love the best of the portraits.. Almost more than the figure paintings. Here's one to duplicate the artist of the skater girl you posted,

So, these are photos which they painted over afterwards? Kind of like they do today with Photoshop computer program.

                  nostromo,

I for my part have collected them for some years now from a newsgroup called alt.binaries.pictures.art.pin-up. It's a low-traffic newsgroup, tight knit, and strictly reserved for on-topic posts, which are pre-1960 pin-up girls and cheesecake art, supplemented by post-1960 images that are held in the same vein. Non-pornographic, appreciative depictions of the female form. You may have to wait a while to build a substantive collection, if that is your desire, but the group has some very skillful and dedicated scanners that post.

                  Vetlegion,

No I believe that is not what they did, in all but the rarest of cases. Most of the accomplished artists I have read about used either live models sitting for the painting, or - occasionally - took a photograph of a model posing, and then proceeded to paint the picture by free hand.

Edit: In fact I have never heard of anybody using the procedure as you described.

So, here's my last contribution for tonight, will continue with "C" tomorrow.

                  Brunner,

Yeah, I say goodnight too, with one of my all time favourites. A 1944 Vargas...

If that's what it takes, so be it.

I simply have to include Charles Dana Gibson, even though he falls well out of the time frame indicated in the title. In fact, let's just regard the 50's as the upper limit and post away with all of the irresistible beauties from before.

                          Gibson,
