The impossible has happened: MacOS X worm/malware spreads via iChat

Sorry Asher, you will have to do better than that.
Bye now.

The fact that it doesn't tells me that the author is mostly someone who wants to let MacOS X users know they aren't safe by design. It could have been a lot worse. In fact, I think there will be some copycats using the same iChat vulnerability to release some truly malicious software soon.
Apple and outside analysts said the program, referred to as Leap-A, is not a "virus," per se. Rather, it "requires a user to download the application and execute the resulting file," Apple said in a statement to CNET News.com. The company provided no further comment on the nature of the program.

Similarly, iTunes released version 6.0.3 last night addressing bugs and security issues. Apple doesn't even know how to make a patch, apparently -- to upgrade you have to download the 30MB+ iTunes/Quicktime combo pack and reinstall both over again.
Must remind you of MS updates reaching 100+ MBs, eh?
This particular worm is rather harmless, but look at what it does -- it successfully tricks users into running a program.
You make it sound like it were a bad thing.
Stupidity should be punished!
@Uncle Boris: I've yet to see a MS patch that forces you to reinstall the whole programme.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

If you're comparing Windows XP service packs to an iTunes fix that should be a couple hundred kilobytes...god help you.
Also, I'm not sure what you're trying to point out with your bolded quotes. If any program can scan your contact list in iChat and then send file requests to all of them at once, that is a vulnerability...the same reason it was when a worm could do it in Outlook Express to spread itself.

us macheads have always pointed out that one advantage comes with smallness - there's not much attention from hackers.
Not true. Aggie has claimed on numerous occasions that Mac doesn't get hit by malware because of its security and not just because of smallness. Which is why Asher posted this. It's because of smallness, not because of better OS security.
Its rather easy to associate Apple, Aggie and smallness all in the same stream of consciousness.

I remember some IE and WMP updates that were quite large. But anyway MS' suckitude should not justify Apple's.

Huh... I bet that scanning your contact list and sending file transfer requests to them is something you can automate anyway.
I have claimed no such thing. Why don't you try reading my posts instead of posting this ****?
Of course you have. The fact everyone except you thinks this is quite an indicator.
IIRC, he's always claimed that OS X was more secure than Windows, but he also admitted that its lower distribution makes it less attractive to malware writers.

That's somewhat misleading. Whenever the argument was made that marketshare plays a role in how many attacks are made against an OS, Aggie always cried "You can't prove it! OS X is just secure by design!"
