Thanks guys. You have no idea how unbelieveably hard it was to be in the room holding and trying to comfort her while they did it.

DD, man, I was doing the same, waiting in the room with my dog and it was so hard. She was staring at me the whole time, which dogs rarely do, look into your eyes for a long time. It felt like she knew what was going on, I personally felt she wanted to say goodbye and also thank you at the same time, you know, to end the suffering which became too great at the end. So at the same time, it was kind of relief, I couldn't have lived another second knowing she was going through all that pain. The time simply came.....

But you're right, I can't go back to the feeling of sadness, becuase it was so overwhelming. I can only know that it was so great I can't replicate it unless it woudl happen again. It's family member for years and there's history and great memories, mostly just great memories. It feels wrong to put someone to sleep who was so loyal to you. How can you do that? I would have shelled all my money if I could have saved her, but that just wasn't possible anymore, so when the time comes and you know it, the time comes.

But they understand, it's them who is going through it. They are so loyal that they let you do it, they even want you to do it and forgive you for it. That's the last GREAT service you can do to your loyal friend, no greater service exists. And it should be you, it feels hard but never let anyone else take your dog to that room or go through it alone. To take the final steps with their master is all they ask for, and that's just how loyal they are and how little they ask in return for a lifetime of service.

I know it'll be hard for days to come, but slowly you will feel better about it. It's been over 3 years when my dog passed, but I still think about it often. You never forget such great friend, except that time heals and you are able to think positive and experience some of those nice memories again, but with a smile on your face. That's the difference, it will bring you smiles later on, a lot of them..

So when you move forward, when the time is right, you never leave your loyal friend even then. So that's not something you need to worry about at all.

I'm really sorry for your loss, and particularly because you had to step up and deal with your pet's distress. Many people can't. You are a good owner for doing things the right way.

I think talking about it has made me feel a little better. It will be a while before I feel OK. Even though I got her from another owner when she was middle aged, she was still a dear friend for a fair number of years. I was near collapse in grief yesterday. I don't know how I made it through the day at work. I can't help but thank you for letting me vent my pain. It really meant a lot to me.

Theben literally had to hold me up after we put my cat, Annie, down ten years ago. Holding her while she died was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
