  • Questions for the Lombardi faithful (and for other pool-game players, too!)

This thread is primarily for those who have participated in one of the pools I've run on Apolyton over the years (NFL, NCAA college hoops, and most recently Academy Awards), but if you've played one of these types of games before elsewhere and would like to help me out with some input, I'd much appreciate it.

I've grown rather frustrated with the limitations of some of the free sites I've used for running these pools over the years (the most maddening being the lack of playoff play for the NFL pool) and in cases where I haven't used a service (like with the Oscars pool), it's very much a headache to do this all manually each and every year. (This was very much evident by the lack of quality to the NFL pool this year, with missed weeks and the lack of team play.)

So, armed with the knowledge of more time in my life in the future (due to my impending graduation from college this spring) and my recently amped-up knowledge of PHP & mySQL from taking over administrative duties at a Survivor fansite late last year, I'm ready to take a big step, and create a new dynamic site to run all my pools in one place. I'm hoping to have enough of it functional by the end of August so I can get the NFL pool off of Sportsline in time for its eighth year.

What I'm interested in hearing from you guys are a couple of things:
    • I want to come up with a new name for the site that isn't so specific to football, since I want to be able to run all kinds of pools on it. Something exciting and catchy would be preferable, as well as something short enough so that the URL for the site isn't a book. Frankly, I've got no ideas as far as this is concerned, and I'm ready to listen to any and all suggestions.
    • I'm also interested in knowing what kind of features you'd be looking for on this site. I've got all the obvious things in mind (unified login, message boards, one-click pool entry), but as to the more specific things, I want to know what you guys' preferences are. No suggestion will be shot down.
This is definitely a major project, and I know I can't do it without the help of you guys who stick it out with me each year.

And just as a postscript, I will put the Oscars pool up later this week (most likely sometime on Wednesday). It'll be run in a fashion similar to last year's, but I'm open to change as to how to handle it since it's new compared to the other two.

If you just want to use this for Apolyton people, then I suggest The Poly Pool. If you wanted to obscure the origings a little more you could change it to POLLY Pool and come up with an acronym for POLLY. Like, Perfectly Orchestrated League for Losing Yams. Or use POLLYS, Perfectly Orchestrated League for Losing Your Sanity.
I never know their names, But i smile just the same

My pools have mostly been Poly people with a few from other places. I'd rather keep the name independent of the site for that reason - I don't want to limit/alienate the potential userbase because of a similar name.

"Perfectly Orchestrated League for Losing Your Sanity" - this did get a chuckle, though.

I'd suggest "__________ Pools" All you need to come up with is a snappy name to shove in front of the "Pools" bit.

This way you have no limit to the number of competitions you can run. It's obvious what you do and what you specialise in.

The snappy "brand" name you put in front really doesn't matter at all. It just has to be something YOU are happy with. We don't really care at all what its called as long as it's not ridiculously long.

                Cool idea, reis!!

I looked at some .com, .net, and .org names via Whois. The good news is there's plenty to choose from. All of the following are available.

                poolarama.org
                pooltastic.net and .org
                poolrific.com, .net and .org
                sportspools.org
                cesspools.net and .org
                pollyschoice.org
                jumpinpools.com, .net, and .org
                pools-jumpin.com, .net, and .org
                tryyourluck.org
                dontknowjack.net and .org
                wrongagain.net

I got bored and stopped there. "Pollys" is not available.

BTW reis, I'd be willing to do some writing for a worthy site. I know it's early in the process, but keep it in mind as the site structure begins to take shape.

Thank you for everybody for your input on the names.

My current inkling is "Fortuna Pools" for the name (Fortuna being the name the Romans gave to the Greek goddess of luck & fortune) and developing the site with a Roman-style theme. I'm still interested in whatever alternatives you have for the name, as well as your thoughts on this idea.

Thanks for the offer. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
