    Sorry to hear that Snoop.

However, continue not to be paranoid. A healthy avoidance of bad areas is good, but paranoia is a seriously bad trait, that appears by too many people once they lose their innocence.

Yeah, being attacked sucks - I remember being attacked, but only as a kid, in the 7th grade. It really feels better when you fight back and kick their asses. A feeling of euphoria. So maybe you should take a couple of your friends on your walks.

        This is the US

The kids probably had guns with them in case something went wrong for them.

It took only one bare-fisted punch to land me in the hospital with a broken cheek bone and a crushed eye socket. At the same incident a friend of mine got hit twice and broke his lower jaw in two places.
Then whoever hit you had a serious ****ing punch. The bones in your face are the hardest bones in your body.

That's why in the US, you also have a gun on yourself, and draw first, after you hear "this is a stick up". Trust me, just as they have guns in the US, they have knives in europe, and at this distance, it's not much more fun.

I remember that thread where Speer asked for advice about firearms, in order to kill the muggers first.

Everybody advised him not to have a firearm if he wouln't be both willing and able to kill with it, because any encounter can degenerate into lethality once firearms are involved.

I think Snoop's mugging is an example of that. They have beaten him and stolen his groceries. If he had attempted to kill them, he might have got one, but there would also be one less Apolytoner today.

I really don't know how to deal with firearms, in this situation, I must admit.

The "move in gangs" advice looks more and more sound.

In any case, the whole limp-wristed attitude is something I don't approve of. Hell, I'd advice a kevlar before you'll hear anything such as "well, such is life, tough, better luck next time".

I am not violent, and I am a very positive socially, and will many times go on silent at a verbal assault. But my general plan is to get as medieval as possible on the asses of people who attempt any physically violent **** against me ( and that includes the theft of property under the threat of violence, and damaging my property to harm me).

I have beaten small children who threw rocks at my car after I specifically warned them not to, and the only thing that will stop me is the variety of possible legal repricussions.

Would you have done the same if you had expected those children to have guns, and to be willing to go GTA at you?

I second Spiff, don't be paranoid about certain neighborhoods. I think your attitude was good at the beginning. Don't have a general fear of neighborhoods. Just be aware that when you are in certain neighborhoods to keep your wits about you. Heck, keep your wits about you no matter where you are at.

My friend was robbed a few weeks ago in DC, but not in a bad area. In fact it was at the nothernmost point of the District where houses go for like 3-4 million. Very nice neighborhood. They took her wallet and punched her in the face.

So simply avoiding certain neighborhoods isn't any help. Sometimes bad things just happen.

You're braver than I am snoopy. A guy stuck something in my back and said he had a gun. I didn't laugh. I gave him what I had on me as mug money -- $10. Didn't get hurt, though.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I got my ass beat pretty bad this time 6 years ago. Literally almost died. I hate gangs and I have so little sympathy for the plight of poor urban areas and there residents because of my expierence.

They all should be buldozed and made into parks and people be dispersed.

I want to echo the advice here about moving in packs, etc. One of the best pieces of advice in walking in rough neighborhoods is to walk in the street. If there's any king of traffic, people are reluctant to mug you in the middle of it for fear of getting caught. Also cross the street a lot to see if people are tailing you.

And it looks like on Saturday afternoon someone tried to pop the lock of my grouphouse. I live in a blue collar/gentrifying neighborhood on a street that gets no crime. I can't believe someone would be ballsy enough to try to pry two locks on the front door of a house in a relatively busy residential area
If you look around and think everyone else is an *******, you're the *******.
